Industry Assessments

The Clean Industry Concierge offers no-cost energy and facility decarbonization assessments and expert guidance to help industrial facilities implement cost-effective, low-carbon technologies and strategies. Assessments will help facilities increase operational efficiency, reduce wasted resources, and develop facility specific decarbonized pathways.

This program offers the following on-site assessments and services:

  • Fluorinated gas replacement technical assistance
  • Biomethane emissions reduction, capture, and utilization technical assistance
  • Decarbonization/energy efficiency technical assistance
  • Carbon credit assistance
  • Facility assessments
  • Other related services

Qualifying industrial facilities will coordinate with a team of staff and students that will conduct a site visit to review major building components, such as the building envelope, lighting, heating, ventilation, and cooling systems. We will also review industrial processes and waste streams, identifying efficiency and decarbonization opportunities. We request utility bills to analyze and compare your facility’s energy use to other similar facilities as well as other site specific data.

Within 60 days of the on-site assessment, the team will deliver a report on energy and decarbonization savings measures, along with incentive and funding opportunities that can be leveraged for implementation.

Both Energy Resources Center at UIC and EnergySense Resilience Center at Illinois have extensive industry experience to provide facilities with decarbonization strategies that reduce costs and increase operational efficiency.

  • Energy Resources Center (UIC) has operated since 1973 providing technical expertise, policy analysis, and professional assistance to promote energy efficiency and distributed generation. Since 2001 the ERC has managed the region’s Industrial Training and Assessment Center, a Department of Energy-funded program for trained staff and students to conduct energy and pollution assessments at mid-size industrial facilities. Since 2003, the ERC has operated the first center of what has now become the US DOE Onsite Energy Technical Assistance Partnership nationwide program. The Midwest Onsite Energy TAP managed by ERC  provides direct technical assistance to industrial facilities and other large energy users with identifying and implementing technology options for achieving site-specific energy objectives.
  • EnergySense Resilience Center has over 22 years of experience providing facility assessments to over 4,500 public and private buildings across Illinois. They are the Illinois Energy Conservation Code training organization in partnership with the Illinois EPA Office of Energy and have received two EPA Pollution Prevention grants to help industrial facilities reduce pollution, energy, and costs.

A note on prioritization of assessment requests: Due to high volumes of potential client in-take, your request for assistance may be placed on a waiting list. We will provide an estimate of how quickly we can visit your facility and will schedule a visit as soon as possible. Priority will be given to requests received from regions of the state that do not have access to existing energy efficiency program support.

If your area is served by a major utility, such as ComEd, Nicor Gas, Ameren Illinois, Peoples, or North Shore Gas, or could receive services from one of the Department of Energy regional ITACs we will provide contact information for their respective assessment programs, along with your estimated wait time for our team so you can choose whether to engage with another program that may be able to perform your assessment sooner. We don’t want you to lose momentum once you’ve decided to explore decarbonization at your facility!
